The ATAAC Department provides Assistive Technology (AT) and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) support as supplementary aids and services for Special Education students in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District. AT is anything that helps a student with a disability maintain or increase functional capability. AAC is the individualized systems to compensate for the impairment and disability patterns of individuals with severe expressive communication disorders and may include any existing speech or vocalizations, gestures, manual signs, and aided communication. AAC is truly multimodal, permitting individuals to use every mode possible to communicate (ASHA, 2012).
The goal of the ATAAC Team is to provide IEP teams the tools and resources necessary for students with disabilities to successfully access their curriculum and communicate effectively. We do this in a variety of ways including providing on-going training, screenings, comprehensive assessments, recommendations, equipment and consultation to students, parents, and staff. The ATAAC Department works in cooperation with other service providers throughout the District as well as coordinating with other resources including the Shadelands Medical Therapy Program of the California Children's Services (CCS), the Northern California Diagnostic Center, the Contra Costa County Department of Education and SELPA, the California AT Network, the Center for Accessible Technology and a national network of AT and AAC providers.
