Online Learning  support for

Teachers of special needs students

In using online resources for teaching you must take a few things into consideration.  Access to the internet for students will be different. Some will have laptop/Chromebooks/desktops and others will only have their parent's cell phones.  With that said all of the apps listed below can be used on all of these devices. With cell phones, the apps will need to be loaded on the phone to be used.  Also, if families do not have home Wifi and only have a cell phone to use that means they will be using their cellular data to access the internet. With that in mind, you might want to limit time on programs like Zoom video conferencing to avoid taxing the family's data plans.

Discipline When Using Technology for Learning

Some students may have trouble staying focused on their work while using technology.  If you or parents see too much off-task use while students use technology such as going to non-educational sites, playing games or chatting with friends you need to redirect these students.  The best way to deal with students who struggle with being off task while using technology is to simply let them know the device will be timed out for a period of time. Which means teachers will need to partner with parents to have the device put away and clearly letting the student know why this is happening.  Hopefully once or twice in doing this will help students who struggle with this.
